Key Considerations You Should Keep in Mind When Making an RV Purchase
Before you head out to the next RV show, let’s help you compile a checklist of factors you should consider during your research process.
Your RV Budget
If only we could present you with a number and say, “this is exactly how much you need to budget for an RV!” The cost of buying an RV will vary significantly, but here are some things you should keep in mind when you start budgeting.
RV Storage Costs
First is where you will keep your RV. Do you have enough space in your backyard to keep it there? If not, you may need to leave it in storage. We go into more detail about this one below, but just remember you’ll need to find somewhere to store it.
RV Insurance Costs
Another cost to remember? Insurance. This cost will be based on the size of your RV, how new or old it is, and whether it can be towed or not.
Class A RVs usually have the highest insurance costs, ranging between $1,000 to $5,000 annually. Expect insurance to cost between $500 to $1,000 annually for a Class B RV. If you own a Class C RV, insurance can range between $800 to $3,000 annually. Lastly, extra coverage for towed trailers goes between $500 to $1,000 annually. Shop around and see which type of coverage works for you.
Ready to sell your home and dive into the RV lifestyle full-time? Fulltimer liability is similar to homeowner’s insurance.
There are various types of insurance for your RV that you should look into as well. These can include:
- Campsite liability
- Replacement cost of personal belongings
- Collision coverage
- Emergency expenses
- Medium duty tow trucks
- Higher liability limits
RV Repair Costs
If you’re buying a used RV, think about what could need repairing or replacing. This can include:
- Tire replacement
- Windshield repairs
- Battery replacement
- Interior repairs
- Plumbing repairs
- Heating/Air conditioning repairs
- Roof repairs
New vs. Used
Like buying a vehicle, you’ll first need to determine whether you want a new or used RV. Use our tips below to see all of your options and decide which one will fit your RV lifestyle best.
Buying A New RV
There’s nothing like the thrill of buying something brand new. You won’t have to worry about hidden maintenance issues, and you’ll have a manufacturer warranty. Buying new also means you’ll be equipped with the latest technology and can customize your RV to add the accessories that best suit your needs.
Buying A Used RV
Saving money is usually the biggest motivator when buying a used RV, as the overall cost will be less. However, keep in mind that payments for new RVs are typically lower because the financing terms are longer.
If you’re into renovation projects, buying used might be a better option than buying new. You could purchase an older model and choose to refurbish the inside to your liking.
When deciding between a new or used RV, it’s also important to consider how long you can use your RV. A model over ten years old that needs multiple repairs and replacements may not be the best financial investment if you plan to use it for many years.
Although you may pay less in upfront costs, always do your homework. Used RVs could come with hidden maintenance issues that could lead to costly repairs.
It’s always best to have a Certified RV Technician conduct a thorough maintenance check before you hit the road to the great outdoors.
Where to Store Your RV
Where will you store your RV? If you have a spacious property, you could park your RV in your backyard. However, in many cities, you legally cannot park a large RV on your driveway for more than 24 hours. Bylaws vary from city to city, so make sure you check to see which rules apply to you.
If you’re unable to store your RV on your property, be sure to shop around and see which RV storage companies are located near you.
Long or Short Trips?
Depending on the type of camping you enjoy, here are some factors you should consider.
Long Trips
Check out the floorplans of the RVs that interest you. Can you imagine spending extended periods there? Some prefer spacious campers, while others don’t mind a tight fit. Consider how much you want to prioritize comfort during your adventures.
If you’re planning a long trip, you might be venturing far from home. When buying a used RV, always check the mileage first.
Beyond long trips, what if you plan on living in your RV? Think about how much you’re willing to downsize and what kind of RV style makes sense for your lifestyle.
Short Trips
If you plan on using your RV for short camping trips throughout the summer, you might not need as much storage. Additionally, travel trailers mean you can fit other items in your vehicle. Make a list of features you want to prioritize based on how long or short you think your RV trips will be.
Types of RVs
Who will be using the RV? You and your significant other? You and the grandkids? Just you? Purchasing an RV is a long-term investment. Ask yourself who will be using it now and in the future.
To help make your decision easier, we list five common RV categories you can choose from to suit your RVing lifestyle.
Class A
Thinking about a classic, big RV? You’re likely imagining a Class A. This type gives you the luxurious home on wheels experience and can sleep up to ten people. Class A RVs will run on either gas or diesel engine. Typically between 21-45 feet in size, you can expect amenities such as:
- Large living and kitchen space
- Entertainment system
- Full-sized bathroom
- Washer and dryer unit
- Spacious sleeping areas
- Ample storage
Keep in mind, Class A RVs can be quite expensive, have lower fuel efficiency, and you may run into travel limitations due to their size. Also, if your motorhome runs on diesel, you will need to get a “Q” endorsement on your licence, which involves taking a 1-day course and passing a test at the registry. Gas motorhomes do not require a special licence.
Class B
Class B RVs are sometimes referred to as sleeper vans or camper vans. Between 17-23 feet, this class will be much smaller than Class A. These smaller vans sleep two to four people and won’t come with full living spaces to save space. However, amenities can include:
- Kitchen
- Shower and toilet
- Entertainment system
- Storage
You’ll get a much better fuel economy, as this type drives like a large van. You won’t have to worry about size restrictions since Class B RVs fit most parking spots and you won’t need a special licence.
Class C
Looking for something in the middle? A Class C RV might best suit your needs. This mid-sized option can range between 20-35 feet and sleep up to eight people. Amenities for a Class C can include:
- Kitchen
- Full-sized bathroom
- Entertainment systems
- Ample storage
- Extra sleeping bunk
- Slide-out options
- Towing capacity
While it is larger than a Class B, the Class C RV drives like a truck and you won’t need a special licence to drive it.
Travel Trailer
When summer arrives, this is the type you’ll see most often driving down the highway. The travel trailer is the most common and comes in various styles and sizes. Depending on size, this type is towed by a car, SUV, or pick-up truck. They can range from 12-35 feet in size and sleep up to ten people. Inside, you can expect:
- Kitchen and living space
- Full-sized bathroom
- Entertainment system
- Ample Storage
- Separate bedroom
Fifth Wheel Trailer
Are you looking for something a bit roomier? Fifth wheel trailers are between 21-40 feet in size and can sleep up to eight people. This type will also need to be towed by a pick-up truck, which gives you the freedom to park the trailer and explore your destination with your vehicle. Amenities for a fifth wheel trailer can include:
- Kitchen and living space
- Full-sized bathroom
- Entertainment systems
- Ample storage
- Separate bedroom
For both towing types, always check your vehicle’s towing capacity. Check the owner’s manual, or ask your dealer and have the tow hitch professionally installed.
Your Inspection Checklist
You have finally come across an RV that feels like the perfect fit. Especially for used ones, doing a thorough walk-through is a must! Here are things you should be looking out for before you close the deal. Look out for:
- Any leaks
- Cracks in the windshield or windows
- Wear and tear on seals
- If hoses/covers are included
- UV damage
- Plumbing issues
- Tire condition
