Many RVers choose the camping life for the endless sunshine and to fully experience the “great outdoors”. But let’s face it, the weather is unpredictable, from snow one minute to rain the next, and we at Bucars RV know how to help pass the storm. We have gathered our best activities to ensure your camping trip isn’t spoiled because of the weather. Before you head out, make sure you have all the right gear ready to go! There’s no such thing as bad weather, but there is such a thing as being under-prepared. Ensuring you have some extra towels, a raincoat, umbrella and even rubber boots ensures you aren’t limited to the inside of your unit for your trip.
If there is no thunder or lightning, rainy weather is one of the best times you can go swimming since the open body of water tends to feel warmer when it is raining out. And for the most part, you will have the pool, lake or pond all to yourself. So don’t be shy, grab a swimsuit and maybe some floaties, and head on down to the water!
However, if the forecast looks like you may have to spend the day tucked away inside your camper, one of the best ways to turn a chilly, rainy afternoon into a relaxing adventure for the whole family is by building a blanket fort inside your RV. This can be accomplished by layering a few thick blankets over seats, cabinets, or sleeping areas to create a warm little hideaway where everyone can gather together. Add soft pillows, sleeping bags, and battery powered lights to make the area even more inviting. Once your fort is all set up, the possibilities are endless. Bring out your favorite movies while listening to the calming sounds of rain. Rainy weather may keep you indoors, but with a little creativity, your camper can quickly transform into the ultimate cozy retreat.
If you are in need of something more hands-on, setting up games such as table tennis or a mini basketball game is a quick, and sure way to out the competitive edge that seems to motivate the whole family to participate. And don’t underestimate the fun that can be had with traditional card games, board games, or jigsaw puzzles.
If the rain has you feeling a little grey, why not add a little colour to the area by doing a few fun crafts? Keeping markers, crayons, air dry clay, craft paper or bracelet making materials tucked away in your trailer can turn a rainy day into a memorable family activity. Crafts are a great way to keep kids entertained while also giving everyone the chance to relax, laugh, and spend quality time together indoors.
You can make friendship bracelets, draw nature-inspired pictures, create campground scrapbooks, or even mold little animals and shapes out of clay. For any younger campers, colouring contests, or DIY paper puppets can add even more excitement to the day. Not only do crafts help pass the time, but they also give you something special to take home from your trip, a handmade memory tied to your camping adventure. Even when the weather refuses to cooperate, a little creativity can make your camper feel warm, lively, and full of colour.
But what’s a rainy camping day without a cozy movie marathon? Once your blanket and pillow fort is built, your camper transforms into the perfect little theatre for a relaxing afternoon indoors. Gather up your comfiest blankets, pile on the pillows, and settle in for a few hours of movies while the rain falls outside. There’s something especially comforting about watching your favourite films while listening to the soft sound of raindrops tapping against the roof of the camper. A movie day is a great way to slow down and enjoy the quality time together, just make sure you don’t forget the snacks!
If all else fails, have a dance party. Bring out the “microphone”, crank the tunes, and bring your best dance moves. You can turn off all the lights, make funny costumes with whatever you may have on hand; tea towels, table cloths, sunglasses and hats. You can even add a little competitive edge to it by having judges and make score cards for categories such as best costume, song choice, or best dance moves. This always brings everyone’s spirits back up, and always makes for good laughs, and memories that last a lifetime.
If the forecast isn’t exactly looking like what you had in mind for your getaway, it may actually be your sign to go on your trip anyways! With less people on the road, it always makes for a peaceful, and memory full trip for the whole weekend. Rain may change your camping plans, but it also creates the perfect excuse to unwind, get cozy, and enjoy a lazy day together.
