This Family Day long weekend, make plans to get outside (maybe even with the RV!) and make some fun memories. From ice skating to a festival celebrating French Canadian Culture, check out our top picks for the long weekend.
- Skate at Olympic Plaza
Lace up your skates and join the 4th Annual XL 103 Family Fun Skate in support of Kids Cancer Care on Monday, February 19th, from noon to 4pm. Glide around the rink to the sounds of the 70s & 80s, sip free hot chocolate and coffee, and try out the giant games. If you don’t have skates, rentals are available from Olympic Plaza Skate Rental.
- Visit Hinton’s Annual French Culture Festival
Enjoy French Canadian cuisine, maple syrup treats on the snow, traditional music, and more on Sunday, February 18th at the Bonhomme Carnaval! Held at William A. Switzer Provincial Park, there is winter camping available, so take the RV and make a weekend of it.
- Try your hand at ice fishing
Family Day weekend also happens to be Free Fishing Weekend! From February 17-19, you can fish without a license, so try your hand at ice fishing at one of Alberta’s many lakes with open fishing seasons. Check out one the ice fishing events happening at provincial parks across the province
- Explore the Skating trail at Beauvais Lake
New this year, grab your skates and head out on the skating trail at Beauvais Lake Provincial Park. You’ll also find some campsites kept open for winter camping, subject to snow and road conditions.
- Go on a guided snowshoe trek
Castle Provincial Park is hosting a free snowshoe tour at Beaver Mines Lake from 12pm-1:30pm on February 17th, led by a Castle Winter Guide. After trekking the snowy trails you’ll enjoy a crackling campfire with hot drinks. Snowshoes are available on a first-come, first serve basis. If you’re spending the weekend, the Castle River Bridge Campground is open for winter camping, subject to snow conditions.
From our family to yours, we hope you have a wonderful long weekend! Do you have any Family Day traditions? Let us know in the comments on Facebook.
