Jasper National Park
Jasper National Park is a great spot to camp in the fall and winter. Before the snow arrives, enjoy hiking in the stunning fall scenery, and in the winter, spend time on the slopes, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fatbiking, and so much more. If you’re happy camping off-the-grid, the Whirlpool Winter Hub campground provides access to over 25 km of groomed cross-country ski trails, but no hookups. The Wapiti campground is located close to town and provides more amenities, like electrical hookups and washroom facilities. RV sites at both campgrounds are available on a first-come, first-serve self-registration basis during the fall and winter.
Payne Lake
If spending the day ice fishing and the evening relaxing by the fire at a lakeside campsite sounds like the perfect winter get-away to you, find a spot at Payne Lake Campground this winter. Sites are unserviced, and you’ll need to bring your own water and firewood.
William A. Switzer Provincial Park
With magnificent views of the Rocky Mountains and five lakes to choose from, William A. Switzer Provincial Park is a great place to visit in any season. Enjoy biking, hiking and canoeing until the snow falls, and then try snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and ice fishing. Year-round camping is available at Jarvis Lake campground, now with electrical hookups, and at Gregg Lake.
Fisher Creek Provincial Recreation Area
Close to Calgary and a good base camp for nearby hiking and snowmobiling, check out the Fisher Creek Provincial Recreation Area in Kananaskis Country. The small campground offers unserviced sites for year-round camping, and recommends that you bring your own drinking water.
Cypress Hills Provincial Park
Head out and explore over 50km of trails in Cypress Hills Provincial Park, and keep watch for wildlife, the park is one of the best bird watching spots in Canada. In the winter, enjoy tobogganing, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and more. The park is also wonderful for stargazing, as it is one of the darkest, largest and most easily accessible dark-sky preserves. All sites at the Elkwater Campground in Cypress Hills Provincial Park remain open year-round, weather permitting.
