There’s no worse feeling than getting ready to go on a fun-filled camping trip and you can’t find your RV keys. Or even worse, they are locked inside your RV! Do you call a locksmith? Get a key cut at the hardware store?
The surprising truth is: there are a few hundred different RV keys manufactured and they are sold as pre-cut keys. Bucars RV Centre carries almost all of the keys available on the market today from the three major manufacturers: Global, Bauer (AP Products), and FIC Fastec. All manufacturers stamp their keys with a number where the metal meets the plastic cover. Global keys typically have a purple plastic top and the numbers start with G. Bauer keys have a black plastic oval-shaped top with a three-digit number and no letters. And lastly, FIC keys have a black plastic square top and are designated by HF or F preceding the number (HF and F can be used interchangeably).

What if you don’t know your key number? Unfortunately, RV manufacturers do not record the key number for your RV and it can’t be looked up by VIN. Many times, it is printed on a sticker inside the lock itself. You can remove the lock assembly from the door to see if this sticker is present. If you are unable to locate the key number, you can possibly gain entry to the trailer through a window, or you will likely need a visit from a locksmith.
Expert tip: make a note of your key number and keep it in a safe place. With this information, you can buy replacement keys quickly and easily. Better yet, buy a spare key today so you always have one on hand!
