A fantastic article about camping out in the parking lot of your favourite big Pow ski resort …

Tow to the Snow.

By RG Coleman

Rallying isn’t the only way to hook up with like-minded trailerites. Airstreaming suits a variety of avocations — from from antiquing to zorbing — and winter sports enthusiasts across the country are towing to the slopes. Some ski areas allow overnight stays in their parking lot, and a handful even offer electrical hookups (a welcome asset when temperatures fall below freezing).

China Peak Mountain Resort in Lakeshore — a Central California town in the Sierra National Forest near Shasta Lake — offers 20 RV parking spaces with electrical hookups at the base of the slopes, just steps from the lifts. Rates are spendy (and spendier during the holidays) and strict rules apply.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort, south of stunning Lake Tahoe on the California side, allows self contained overnight camping in the parking lot during the winter, Sunday through Thursday. Check the Kirkwood Mountain Resort website for more information about “green light” days, maximum nights, and holiday restrictions. Like China Peak, Kirkwood has many tedious rules that are strictly enforced. The good news: half of all parking fees and RV pass sales are generously donated to the National Forest Foundation to be used for local conservation projects in the Eldorado National Forest.

In Wisconsin’s Penokee Mountains just south of Lake Superior, Whitecap Mountain Resort offers a designated area for RVs without hookups. (Call in advance to check space availability.)

“There are several different resorts in the Northwest that actually accommodate trailer parking,” said Zach Crist, a professional skier and mountain guide. Among them, the Mt. Baker ski area in Washington (which permits self-contained RVs and campers in specific parking areas), Stevens Pass on the “Cascade Loop” near Seattle, which provides hookup space for 70 RVs at a reasonable rate of $30 per night, and at Alpental in the backcountry of Washington’s Snoqualmie Pass. “There’s no formal lodge or hookups there,” explained Crist, “but people are camping out in the parking lot. It’s not uncommon to see groups of RVers doing a weekend trip out there.”

Crist explores beyond the resorts as an ambassador for K2 and Eddie Bauer, and team member in the First Ascent Airstream, a customized Panamerica, loaded with gear, athletes, and a film crew. “We use the Airstream in a really interesting way,” he said. “It helps us base out of remote areas. A lot of what we do involves hiking into the mountains and finding new terrain.”

“You can use the Airstream at a trail head. If you’re lucky they have a hookup; but in the winter, those are scarce.” Boondocking is allowed to try to get as close as possible to the slopes, but “it depends on where you are,” said Crist, who lives in Sun Valley. “Idaho is fortunate because we have an enormous public lands resource, and millions of acres of wilderness, . . . People don’t even know that you’re there if you’re parked in a remote area.”

Ski Squatting 101

Some winter resorts allow hookup-free camping on their property overnight by simply looking away. Ask permission before putting down your stabilizers.

Make reservations where hookups are offered. Spaces near the lifts will be sorely limited.

Electrical hookups for your Airstream are not required for very limited stays — your forced-air heater operates without shore power — but whenever possible, plug into a power source for added safety and comfort. Many Airstreamers supplement with a small ceramic heater to help conserve battery power and propane, which can draw down fast. (Heaters in late model Airstreams will even prevent water in the holding tanks from freezing, as hot air blows across the belly pan, but don’t plan on using water in temps below 26 degrees.)

You weren’t anticipating freezing weather, but the temperature dropped unexpectedly and now you’re caught in a cold snap with water in your tanks? Close your dump valve and pour a cup of RV antifreeze in your sink and toilet

Stay dry — both you and your Airstream. Release condensation by cracking a window.

Top off the propane tank before you embark, and identify propane purveyors along the route to and from your destination in advance. Just in case.

When using a generator, ensure that the exhaust pipe isn’t in a snowbank.

Most ski areas have a lodge with a laundry room to dry clothes for the next day — or a hot tub to enjoy, or movies for the kids. Ask permission before using any facilities.

Don’t be surprised if you’re required to move the trailer in the middle of the night to a different site. Be ready to tow when you hear the snow plow approaching as it clears the parking lot for tomorrow’s paying customers.
